Drama Lesson Plans

Feb 2012 Are you a frustrated drama teacher or drama club owner because you are having problems coming up with new and challenging drama lesson plans? Are your students getting bored with your classes?  A bored student is a disengaged student – and that means you will have a tough time getting them to concentrate on what you’re trying to teach them.  They will be unable to reach their full creative potential if they are bored with your class

In order to create activities that your students will find challenging and fun, you will have to do some planning before-hand.  You will need to come up with activities that are age specific.  Drama lesson plans can help you stay organized and help you run your classes smoothly.

So how do you go about creating drama lesson plans that your students will enjoy and be challenged by? Here are a few tips to get you started:

1)      If you have students who are pre-schoolers, you can use picture books and finger puppets. Have a wide variety of picture books on hand, with many different characters and scenery.  The children can look through the books, and predict what will happen next, or create different stories based on the pictures they see. They could also act out the stories using finger puppets. Encourage your younger students to cut pictures out of magazines and bring them to class; then come up with a story based on the pictures.

2)      Older children who can read and write will enjoy working together to write a story. Each student will write one word or one sentence in a journal. As the journal gets passed around from student to student, they will eventually end up with a completed story. They will have fun coming up with crazy and silly stories!

3)      Teenagers will enjoy coming up with their own stories and plots based on silent movies or foreign films. They could either act it out or use the mime technique.  With the use of technology, they could make their own film, with their peers as co-stars. They can even upload it onto Youtube!

4)      Have a brainstorming session with your students, no matter what their age. Find out what interests them, and what activities they would like to try. You could have all of the students put their ideas into a hat, and each class have one of your students draw one idea. Then that idea is your activity for that class. This will ensure that you never run out of activities that will challenge your students

As a drama teacher, your job is to keep your students interested enough to keep coming back to class, and challenging enough that they will continue to develop their talents. Variety will help them from getting bored.  There is no limit to the possibilities of your student’s talents. Creating drama lesson plans in advance will keep your students happy, challenged and stimulated. They are tomorrow’s actors, writers, playwrights and creative geniuses!
